![]() After an excellent conversation on messenger with the Fontself team, it was clear that I needed option (2) to design, generate and export a color bitmap font. ![]() ![]() There are two versions (1) For Photoshop (2) For Photoshop & Illustrator. A specialist font design and creation app that bolts onto the latest version of Adobe Cloud. With that failure out of the way it was onto premium software options and there was one that had caught my eye, Fontself. Only one technical downside, it does not currently support color bitmap fonts - but neither does Windows. I'm certain that this is a pretty powerful tool in the right hands, it's no nonsense. I would recommend a good read through to gain a solid understanding of font principles, prior to designing as there is a fair amount terminology to digest. FontForge is an excellent app for those who want to get into the nitty gritty, its also FREE. However, the Mac export completely eluded me and was beyond what could be achieved without a deep dive. Which incidentally are useful and helpfully detailed. In terms of outcome, I did create a font that worked in Word, Photoshop and Illustrator, on a PC - despite the errors. To get the best from this, one really does need to understand the intricacies of font design and whilst there is a lot of very detailed information the FontForge site, I didn't have the time required to explore it. However, it soon became apparent that this unassuming little app was actually quite sophisticated and that my font knowledge was not up to the task. Importing and converting the images (svg) and kerning configuration wasn't that difficult. The interface had not changed that much, the menu system is easy to navigate and help files excellent. It reviewed well and has maintained an excellent reputation for a number of years, plus I have dabbled with it in the past. ![]() The initial plan was to use FontForge, an open source desktop design app. I consider myself to be a reasonably advanced Photoshop user and mostly up to speed with Illustrator. A brief, topline font design software review, from a first timer perspective. ![]()
